Besides, it really doesn't take a lot of money to lavish a loved one. A dozen roses breaks the bank? Fine, just buy one and set it up as a centerpiece for a home-cooked meal. ****GRAPHIC IMAGES*** ****PLEASE DO NOT DOWNLOAD/USE ANY IMAGE WITHOUT WRITTEN PERMISSION OF THE GAZETTE*** This is the final set of pictures from my coverage of the earthquake in Haiti, a very small selection of what I have.  I've tried to be as open as possible and not censor my selection based on how graphic an image might be.  For me it's important to show how horrible the consequences of the earthquake have been especially since these consequences could have been avoided.  Gazette photojournalist Allen McInnis is now in Haiti, and we will post some of his images…

****PLEASE DO NOT DOWNLOAD/USE ANY IMAGE WITHOUT WRITTEN PERMISSION OF THE GAZETTE*** Today I saw swarms of people descending on stores which collapsed in the earthquake, trying to scrounge whatever they could find.  They were chased off repeatedly by police officers and security guards alike but they just kept coming back. There isn't a day that goes by that I don't come across a dead body or part of one lying somewhere on the street or sidewalk.  Some are earthquake victims; others are victims of shootings either by police or others.  Whatever the case the…

A set list that began with subversive country/gospel (Kiss Me Like You Mean It) and concluded with a nautical death letter (From a Sinking Boat). A band featuring three singers, cello, ukulele and no percussion. All in a vaudevillian cabaret venue that rarely appears on the pop/rock calendar.       The sight of a couple of canes waving joyously in the air near the front of Oscar Peterson Hall, toward the end of Craig Morrison's 13th annual Roots of Rock n' Roll concert, was undeniably comical. It fairly begged for a music writer with more attitude than I to take the bait and move in for the easy punchline.'Tude, however, has never been my strong suit. In fact, in those canes, I saw a sinister visual echo of something I had been thinking while drummer Gary Sharkey was singing the Percy Sledge classic When a Man Loves a Woman. With their sleaze, attitude, and sloppy-drunk guitar riffs, Mötley Crüe have always been a bar band, albeit of the Hollywood variety. It’s just that at one point, they got big—and good—enough that they should have been playing beer halls in Valhalla, or wherever the girlfriends of bikers go where they die.  Which is a pretty good a way to describe their Bell Centre concert last night. 5 Feb 2010 | 8:22 pm
Despite the back-breaking preparation that goes into live performance, sometimes it's chaos that provides a concert's defining moment. So it went with Chantal Kreviazuk at the Olympia Friday night. For all the elegance, open-heart emotion and living-room chats Kreviazuk offered through her 105-minute set, a series of by-request fragments in the encore made the strongest impression. Not for their immaculate execution – lyrics were fluffed, chords were stumbled over, and Kreviazuk's band seemed to be learning Wayne as they went – but for a sense of daring and spontaneity…

    8 Feb 2010 | 3:55 pm
Due to the recent inclement weather that paralyzed portions of the U.S. East Coast, the workouts for Alouettes kicker Damon Duval have now been delayed, but will still take place. He now leaves for New York on Tuesday and is scheduled to workout for the Jets on Wednesday. On Thursday, he's scheduled to travel to Cincinnati and will workout for the Bengals on Friday.

Alouettes kicker Damon Duval has a busy week ahead. He's working out for the Cincinnati Bengals on Tuesday, followed by the New York Jets the following day, a source has told The Snap exclusively. Duval worked out last week for the Atlanta Falcons, and while the team appeared ready to sign the veteran following an impressive showing, they've yet to offer Duval a substantial enough signing bonus to warrant his departure from the CFL. Duval has spent his entire five-year CFL career with Montreal. He's heading into the option year of his contract with the Als, meaning he only has the…

People occasionally ask me what a football writer does in the winter. My answer: As little as possible. My mandate this winter, to a greater extent than was the case a year ago, is to try and remain in shape. Most weekday afternoons find me at the West Island Y on Brunswick Blvd., where I do an hour of cardio work. Then, time permitting, I walk a mile around the track. I began working out last March and was amazed how quickly I lost weight. Now, on a good day, I generally tip the scales between 195 and 200 pounds which, I figure, is about as good as it's going to get considering I…

According to a Toronto newspaper, veteran Canadian cornerback Davis Sanchez has been released, at his insistence, by the Alouettes. Sanchez, who has spent nine seasons in the Canadian Football League, had a clause written into his last contract, signed last winter, stipulating he would be released to explore his options. One of those could be a return to the Als, according to the published report, although Sanchez wants to test the market with free agency about to begin. The 35-year-old has had three separate stints with Montreal and has been a fixture on the strong-side. Originally drafted…
  • Another free agent returning

    Herb Zurkowsky
    2 Feb 2010 | 5:08 pm
Another day, and another potential free agent has re-signed with the Alouettes. The latest is reserve fullback and special teams player Dahrran Diedrick, who signed for two years and an option. He was eligible to become a free agent on Feb. 16. The 6-foot, 222 pounder is heading into his sixth CFL season – the last five with Montreal. Diedrick, who attended the University of Nebraska although he's a Canadian, is talented enough to start on most CFL teams. But, given the Als' depth, his role primarily comes on special teams. He played 14 games last season, gaining 106 yards on 19…

  • Toronto critics dig Xavier Dolan's J'ai tué ma mère

    Brendan Kelly
    5 Feb 2010 | 6:43 am
I know, I know, you're sick of hearing about the little film that could. But still. It is the day Xavier Dolan's J'ai tué ma mère opens in Toronto so I think we have to yet again spill some ink - or whatever is spilled when you write a blog - to take a look at the critical reaction to the award-winning Quebec flick. Well, surprise, surprise, the Toronto crix really, really like this no-budget French-language dramedy about a teen guy - Dolan himself - who has a love-hate relationship with his mommie, played with gusto by Anne Dorval. Click here for the review by…
  • More than a million Quebecers watch a lame garage-league hockey game

    Brendan Kelly
    1 Feb 2010 | 2:48 pm
I thought no one would be watching and, yet again, I'm oh so wrong. Turns out 1.449 million folks tuned in Sunday night to watch the first hockey game in the reality-show, talent-show La Série Montréal-Québec on the TVA Network. This is the show from Productions J, the same company that brings us Star Académie, and it's basically Star Académie goes to the hockey rink. They created two teams of amateur hockey players, one from Montreal, one from Quebec, and the goal is try to revive the great Canadiens-Nordiques rivalry of yesteryear. But I was…
  • Quebec films go global (sort of)

    30 Jan 2010 | 3:42 pm
Big news for the Quebec film biz out of Park City, Utah Friday. Two Quebec flicks won major prizes at Slamdance, the alternative fest that runs alongside Sundance. Click here for my story in Saturday Gazette on the wins at Slamdance. What's neat here is that two films made chez nous have nabbed awards at Slamdance and two other Quebec films, Les sept jours du talion and Last Train Home, attracted all kinds of heat at Sundance. Director Charles-Olivier Michaud's Snow and Ashes won the Slamdance award for best narrative feature while Alexandre Franchi's The Wild Hunt won the…
  • Xavier Dolan's J'ai tué ma mère has shot at a César

    Brendan Kelly
    23 Jan 2010 | 10:34 am
Who cares about the Oscars, right? Earlier this week, the Academy Awards voters snubbed Xavier Dolan's J'ai tué ma mère, shutting it out of the nine-film foreign-film long list. But it turns out the French are a little more appreciative of M. Dolan's fine film. The Montreal flick has snared a nomination at les Césars - the French equivalent of the Oscars - for best foreign film. That's the good news. The much-less-good news is the ferocious competition our favourite wonder-kid is going to be facing at les Césars. For one thing, his film is…
  • Xavier Dolan's J'ai tué ma mère is NOT going to win an Oscar

    Brendan Kelly
    21 Jan 2010 | 7:10 am
Well it turns out that Xavier can't win 'em all. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences has unveiled the not-so-short list of nine films that are still in the hunt for the Academy Award for best foreign-language film and, sadly, Xavier Dolan's prize-magnet of a film J'ai tué ma mère is not amongst the nine films. The Academy will whittle the nine foreign films down to the five nominated films. That's going to be announced Feb. 2, along with all the other Oscar nominations. And Dolan will, obviously, not be getting a nomination. That's too…

Ursula Rucker is an amazing spoken word artist from Philadelphia. My friend Helen and I, both feeling bereft over the loss of our mutual friend, Mary Finnegan, caught Rucker's  show at the La Sala Rosa last night, as part of the Festival Voix d'Amériques.  It wasn't just a show. It was a  healing, defiant, uplifting celebration of poetry, jazz and hip-hop (her three-man backup band was wonderful).  At intermission, I rushed to buy Rucker's CD. Having just seen a play about Beat Generation writer Jack Kerouac and Michel Tremblay at Centaur…

Liverpool win. Chelsea win. Manchester United win. What's missing here? Arsenal, of course. They were the only one of the English Premiership big four who didn't win.  This is not surprising as they were playing Chelsea, who did win. But Arsenal are still in the top four, which has taken on a depressingly familiar look as Liverpool start to grind out results. The pretenders, Manchester City, Aston Villa and Southampton, are still hanging in there, but most fans (except those of the big four) would dearly love to see some change. But, as usual, the real excitement is at the…

..... Egypt got partial compensation for failing to make it t the World Cup finals by beating Ghana 1-0 in the African Cup of Nations final. But off the pitch, the African football confederation made the extraordinary decision to ban Togo from the next two tournaments for "political interference." You may remember that on the way to the first game in the tournament in Angola, their bus was attacked by terrorists. Three members of the backroom team were killed, and the reserve goalkeeper seriously injured. There was a period of dithering, understandably, on whether to play on. First…

It’s good when the boys play nicely together. Carlos Tevez duly scored for Manchester City at Old Trafford last night to send shivers through the Manchester United faithful, but in the end, the night belonged to that other has-been bad boy Wayne Rooney. Rooney’s late goal put United in the Carling Cup final and broke the hearts of Manchester City, who are desperate to be able to boast of being Manchester’s top team. Former United striker Tevez managed to control himself after scoring, unlike the first leg when he scored twice and found it necessary to gesture at the United dugout. the…

When Sol Campbel trotted onto Stoke City's pitch yesterday for his first game back in Arsenal's colours, he might have reflected that his last two games were with different teams – Portsmouth and Notts County, and he lost them both. It didn't get better in the FA Cup fourth round yesterday. Campbell played well enough for an old guy, and seemed reasonably fit after a crazy few months that took him to League Two County where he looked around, didn't like the lay of the land and walked out. County, facing a winding up order, almost beat Premier Division Wigan in the FA Cup…

With a titanic battle developing between Manchester United and Chelsea at the top, another major scrap for fourth place between Liverpool, Spurs, Manchester City and Aston Villa, no-one can truly say the English Premier Division is not a load of fun this year. But the laughs reached a new crescendo last night (unless you are a United fan) at City's Eastlands Stadium when City used two goals by Carlos Tevez to beat United 2-1 in the Carling Cup semi-final first leg. United boss Sir Alex Ferguson says United are noisy neighbours. That would be to do to a monster billboard put up by City at…

I dont know about you guys but I’m still feeling great after yesterday’s refreshing win over the defending champs. From the start Montreal took the game to Pittsburgh with speed and determination. They used an aggressive forecheck, and for the first time since Martin uttered the words “puck possession”, the Canadiens delivered with crisp passes in the neutral zone, and bodies crashing the net looking for rebounds. The result was what we’ve been looking for from day 1. The Canadiens battled for rebounds that they never seem to win, and controlled long stretches…

What a great weekend this will be with two Canadiens matinee games and the Superbowl. Here’s hoping that it isn’t ruined by Sidney Crosby who I’m pretty sure has never played a bad game against the Canadiens in his life. Sid is having himself a whale of a season with 71 points in 56 games. More impressive is the fact the Kid has taken to scoring goals (37) with reckless abandon, convincing those who had him pegged as a set-up man to re-think their opinion. So this afternoon all of the Habs nation will be cheering in loud opposition to Sid before we change our tune in loud…

It never takes very much to set the mood for these two clubs. Living in Beantown last year I can tell you from first-hand experience that Bruins fans feel the same loathing and disgust that we feel towards them. Last year I watched a fat slob of a Broons fan swear at a middle aged French-Canadian woman and block her from passing his seat simply because she wanted to use the rest room while wearing a Habs jersey. As I was leaving TD Banknorth (suffering enough with the normal rage I feel when the Habs lose), I had a particularly hilarious Bruins fan shout me down saying it was “a long…

The Habs will be in tough tonight as they face one of the league’s hottest teams in the Vancouver Canucks who have won their last 7 games. They go up against the Sedin twins who some believe came within 24 hours of potentially suiting up for the Habs this year. In itself, that is bad news. Worse however, is the news that the team’s leading goalscorer (by a huge whopping prairie mile) Michael Cammalleri will be sidelined with a knee injury for 6-8 weeks. For the NHL’s worst 5 on 5 team that is about as bad a break as it gets. One of the things I remember talking about during…

The Habs would do well to start early and play like a team that is desperately clinging to a hope of the post season. That sentiment should start at the top. I understand that JM has been playing with a short stack this season due to many injuries, but his Carbo-esque attempts at using grinders in skill spots and vice versa needs to end. I’m going to go out on a limb here and make a…

Yes, I hate the term “new classic” too, but what the heck. This pizza is destined to become a classic, chez nous. Quick quiz: what is a “Samaritan?” If you answered “a person who selflessly does a good deed,” you are wrong. A Samaritan is simply a person from Samaria, a mountainous region of the Holy Land between Judea and Galilee — more or less what we now call the West Bank of Israel. The ancient Samaritans had a lot in common with the ancient Jews, but they weren’t on the same team, so to speak. Or perhaps it’s better to say they were on the same team (the Abrahams) but were on different shifts. Put it this way; when the Parable of the Good Samaritan was…

No, this is not a review of commercial, over-the-counter, factory-made salad dressings. Rather, it is a chance for me to get something off my chest, to prove something, and perhaps even exorcise an old demon. It has to do with Kraft salad dressings. When I was a kid, we didn’t eat a lot of salad at home, but when we did it was dressed with Kraft dressings. The idea of making your own salad dressing was, in the Cape Breton of the 1970s, as obscure and weird as building your own car or making home-made rubber boots. After all, why mix together some homemade slop like some kind of poor…

The Blork Blog is nine years old today. That’s older than some people I know! Loyal readers have probably noticed that I haven’t been posting very frequently lately. In other words, in a time of Facebook and Twitter, the role of the personal blog has diminished significantly, and that makes me less enthusiastic about putting in the time…

    The Montreal Real Estate Blog
  • Our Brand-Spanking New Facebook Page

    5 Feb 2010 | 7:40 am
Finally I got around to making a Facebook Fanpage for the Blog. It has been on my mind since last November, and I must admit: I didn’t have a clue how to make one. But miracles do happen, and last week I belatedly uncovered the Facebook Fanpage Mystery. Now, it’s just figuring out what to do with it. I’m still pondering over that last one. Suggestions are, as always, gratefully appreciated. You might think that having a blog is already enough work. And you’re right. What I am hoping here is that -unlike the blog- the Facebook page will be self-supported. Of course,…
  • 2009 Real Estate Market – Good Performance

    Deyanira Bautista
    25 Jan 2010 | 4:30 am
December’s stats came out early this month. The Greater Montreal Real Estate Board (GMREB) often gives us monthly numbers and this time, they also have some information on how the year did in general, compared to 2008. We had a slow start last year. The market didn’t show serious signs of activity until late spring. Of course, they didn’t mention that until now, but we could all feel it.  Glad that slow time is over. According to the GMREB, in 2009 prices increased a 5% more than in 2008. There were also more sales- houses lead the way this time, as opposed to condos. And…

photo: Deya Bautista This little park is the same one facing the Condo Church in little Italy, on St Laurent Blvd. According to Google maps it’s called Parc Martel. It’s located right at the entrance of the lovely neighbourhood of Little Italy. If you’ve never been there, it’s on St Laurent and Ste Zotique, where all the stores (apparel, groceries, etc) as well as restaurant and cafes are located. From this point on, and all the way north until Jean Talon there are many many places to shop, eat or just visit. There is now new developments and businesses opening on the…
  • No Escrow in Montreal

    Deyanira Bautista
    18 Jan 2010 | 3:22 am
We don’t hear about Escrows in Montreal. Believe it or not, my fellow Real Estaters (I think I just created a new word) from other provinces and countries. The first time I heard, actually I didn’t hear it, I READ the word Escrow it was in a Condo Buyer’s Guide I picked up for my clients, and right next to the glossary description of escrow there was a note: Not applicable in Quebec. Naturally I didn’t take interest on that word, up until I had to work with someone who demanded a escrow company and their contact number. “A what? Escrow ??….Hmm, I think I’ve heard…
  • Google Maps the Next Real Estate Search Engine?

    Deyanira Bautista
    15 Jan 2010 | 3:30 am
I guess it was just a matter of time before Google decided to monetize on the home search queries. A lot of real estate related websites are now using google maps (in the form of a plugin) as part of their listings, and so far is working out just fine. I’ve noticed more and more properties appearing on google maps – or  Google Real Estate 2.0 as they are calling it- since this last summer, and the last time I checked there were a lot of listings from the west  coast of the US. But slowly is moving into Canadian territory. More and more Canadian cities are listing their…

  • Gainey Abandons GM Role In Montreal Under Curious Circumstances

    Robert L
    8 Feb 2010 | 3:14 pm
In the city where every possible hockey decision represents a potential controversy, it is difficult tell the smoke from the dry ice when it comes to today's decision by Bob Gainey to step down from the position of general manager of the Canadiens. There will always be speculation attached to what occurred today and a certain "did he jump or was he pushed" stigma will always be tied to the things fans and reporters are not privy to. Bob Gainey called it a personal decision, saying that he prefrerred to step down a bit sooner rather having to leave once it was too late. Critics will suggest…

I like the way this salad bowl integrate a resting place for the servers. The shape of the bowl is elegant. I imagine using one side as a handle. Morph designed this salad set made from easy to clean polypropylene. The set is available in vibrant green, black or white. Joseph Jospeh was founded in UK by the twin brothers Richard and Antony Joseph in 2003. They are the one who made the Index chopping board set designed to reduce the likelihood of cross-contamination of different food types. This post was initially about a salad recipe. As I wrote it, the recipes of the dinner I cooked last night became a part of the story. This is a simple menu that you could serve when you have friends over. It is based on taste, lots of good taste. But what I like the most is that you will not pass all night on the kitchen. The ingredients are available at any grocery store. I find everything at the village; we stayed at the ski cottage this weekend. This makes it the ideal menu for stress-free entertaining. Last Wednesday, I went to a fun event organized by Les Zurbaines in collaboration with Vic Park (also called spa Victoria Park), a zen-like, upscale gym and spa located in Westmount, Quebec. I got the pleasures to chat with my fellow bloggers and journalists in the lifestyle and fashion market. They set up sessions for us to try the spa and salon services. They went for a make-up and a manicure. I love both. As you can see from my picture, the make up was a success. And I learned a few makeup tricks to enhance the features of my face. It was the first time I dare to go for a dark grey nail…

This is the advantage of the new kitchen that relies on big drawers. Beside being beautiful, her idea teaches her daughter that she must participate in household chores. You can custom made the dividing drawers to fit anything you need to store. + photos and instructions at Lovely Design + via The Kitchn You might also like these posts
